Project Overview:
The Premnagar Wadi project, located in Surajpur district, is a part of the WADI Programme initiated by NABARD. The project aims to empower local communities through sustainable horticulture practices, soil conservation, water resource development, and capacity building initiatives. By integrating various components and sub-components, the project strives to enhance livelihood opportunities, promote environmental conservation, and foster socio-economic development in the region.
Components and Sub-components:
1. Horticulture Plantation & Maintenance: Under this component, participants are engaged in planting and maintaining fruit-bearing trees such as mangoes and guavas on their lands. This not only contributes to food security but also provides a sustainable source of income for the beneficiaries.
2. Soil Conservation: The project emphasizes the adoption of soil conservation practices to prevent soil erosion and improve soil fertility. Techniques such as contour bunding and mulching are promoted to conserve soil moisture and enhance crop productivity.
3. Water Resource Development: To address water scarcity issues, the project facilitates the development of water resources such as construction of check dams, farm ponds, and provision of solar-powered irrigation systems. These interventions ensure efficient utilization of water resources for agricultural purposes.
4. Health: The project includes health awareness programs focusing on nutrition, sanitation, and hygiene practices. By promoting health education and access to healthcare services, the project aims to improve the overall well-being of the community members.
5. Women Development: Special attention is given to women's empowerment through skill development training, income-generating activities, and capacity-building initiatives. Women are encouraged to actively participate in decision-making processes and become agents of change in their communities.
Success Story:
One of the beneficiaries of the Premnagar Wadi project is Shyam Narayan, a resident of Abhaypur village. Despite facing financial hardships due to limited education opportunities, Shyam's life took a positive turn when he joined the project in 2022. By planting mango and guava trees on his barren land and receiving support for irrigation infrastructure, Shyam successfully cultivated peanuts in the first year, earning Rs. 12,610. With subsequent crops of chili and wheat, Shyam's income continued to grow, allowing him to contribute to his family's well-being and invest in further agricultural ventures. Shyam's success story highlights the transformative impact of the project on individual livelihoods and community development.
Conclusion:
The Premnagar Wadi project, supported by NABARD's WADI Programme, has emerged as a catalyst for sustainable development in Surajpur district. By integrating multiple components and empowering local communities, the project has contributed to improved livelihoods, environmental conservation, and social empowerment. Continued support and collaboration are essential to sustain the positive impact and further enhance the project's outcomes in the future.
