Water Conservation

READS actively promotes water conservation efforts in Northern Chhattisgarh, addressing issues like water scarcity and resource management. By implementing watershed programs and advocating for sustainable water practices, READS helps communities adapt to changing environmental conditions. These initiatives ensure access to clean water for agriculture and daily needs, enhancing resilience against droughts and other challenges.

WHAT WE DO

Water conservation is a critical focus area for READS, particularly in addressing the challenges of water scarcity and sustainable resource management in Northern Chhattisgarh. Through its Water Conservation program, READS implements various initiatives aimed at harnessing and preserving water resources for agricultural, domestic, and ecological needs.

One of the key initiatives under the Water Conservation program is the implementation of watershed projects, also known as NABARD Jalgrahan Karyakram, which involves the construction of various structures to capture and conserve water. These structures include check dams, contour trenching and bunding (CCT), water absorption trenches (WAT), farm bunding with runoff and furrow bunding (FB-RFB), thump-ons, and stop-dams, among others.

These structures are strategically designed and built to slow down the flow of water during rainfall, allowing it to infiltrate into the soil, recharge groundwater, and prevent soil erosion. By capturing rainwater and runoff, these structures help in replenishing groundwater levels, maintaining soil moisture, and supporting agricultural activities even during dry spells.

Moreover, READS actively engages with local communities, farmers, and stakeholders to raise awareness about the importance of water conservation and sustainable water management practices. Through capacity-building workshops, training programs, and awareness campaigns, READS educates communities about water-saving techniques, efficient irrigation methods, and the need for judicious use of water resources.

Furthermore, READS emphasizes the integration of traditional knowledge and modern technology in its water conservation efforts. By leveraging indigenous practices and adopting innovative solutions like drip irrigation, rainwater harvesting, and micro-irrigation systems, READS strives to maximize water efficiency and optimize agricultural productivity.

In addition to agricultural water conservation, READS also focuses on promoting water conservation at the household and community levels. It encourages the adoption of water-saving devices, rainwater harvesting systems, and wastewater recycling initiatives to minimize water wastage and ensure sustainable water use in households, schools, and public spaces.

Through its comprehensive approach to water conservation, READS aims to address the pressing challenges of water scarcity, soil degradation, and climate change while promoting the long-term resilience and well-being of communities in Northern Chhattisgarh. By fostering a culture of responsible water stewardship and collective action, READS envisions a future where water resources are conserved, managed, and shared equitably for the benefit of present and future generations.
