Impact of NABARD Watershed Project on Bagicha Block of Jashpur District

The NABARD Maina-Laranga-Lodhena Watershed Project, implemented by READS NGO, has brought significant transformation to the Bagicha block of Jashpur district through the construction of various structures aimed at water conservation and agricultural improvement. The primary impact of these structures has been an increase in the water table in the project villages, which has played a vital role in revitalizing the local agriculture and improving livelihoods.

As a result of the project, the agricultural area in the region has expanded, allowing farmers to cultivate more land and increase crop production. Improved irrigation and changes in crop rotation practices have led to higher yields and better use of available resources. Additionally, the project has created employment opportunities for the local population, providing them with stable income sources.

The project has also empowered women by enabling them to engage in various livelihood activities such as running grocery shops, sewing, goat rearing, floriculture, food processing, mushroom cultivation, and operating mini rice mills. These activities have given women in the community the chance to generate additional income and contribute to their household economies.

Furthermore, the project has introduced several climate-proofing measures to help the community adapt to the challenges posed by climate change. Initiatives like plantation drives, System of Rice Intensification (SRI), biogas units, Ajola units, crop diversification, and promoting resilient crop varieties have contributed to sustainable farming practices. The installation of solar pumps, drip irrigation systems, and boribandh (earthen dams) has enhanced water conservation efforts, ensuring more efficient use of water resources. These efforts are not only mitigating the effects of climate change but are also ensuring the long-term sustainability of agricultural practices in the region.

The NABARD Maina-Laranga-Lodhena Watershed Project has brought about a significant positive change in the Bagicha block, leading to increased agricultural productivity, improved water management, enhanced employment opportunities, and climate resilience, benefiting both the people and the environment of the region.
