The NABARD Wadi Project, operated by READS NGO, is transforming the agricultural landscape in Pratappur Block, Surajpur District. Under this project, 500 tribal families from villages Bhardha, Singhra Bagda, and Chachidand are now cultivating intercrops like peanuts, parwal, tomatoes, and brinjal, significantly increasing their income. Previously, due to dry, unproductive lands, farmers could only practice rain-dependent farming once every three years, earning a minimal income of ₹2000 to ₹5000.
Through READS' strategic interventions, including land fencing, water management, and sapling plantation, these once-barren lands now support 2 to 3 crops annually. Farmers are now able to earn ₹40,000 to ₹75,000 per acre by implementing intercropping techniques. READS has played a pivotal role in improving irrigation systems and helping farmers adopt sustainable practices that have led to substantial income growth.
This project, powered by READS' effective execution and NABARD's support, highlights the potential of rural development initiatives to transform livelihoods and foster economic growth in tribal communities.
