Project Overview:
In collaboration with the District Mineral Foundation (DMF) and I.I.T. Bombay, Rural Education & Development Society (READS) initiated a bee keeping project in the Manora Development Block of Jashpur district. The project aimed to empower 50 experienced beekeepers across 9 villages with the distribution of 100 honeybee colonies on September 1, 2023. Additionally, 10 groups were formed among these beekeepers, each with a designated leader responsible for overseeing activities and reporting. READS workers regularly visited beekeepers to provide guidance and support.
Training and Field Visits:
In October, Mr. Manjunath from I.I.T. Bombay conducted a 2-day field visit and training session. The training was divided into 4 zones covering topics such as beekeeping techniques, hive management, and division. Emphasis was placed on understanding bee behavior and the importance of timely hive division. Mr. Manjunath's practical demonstrations and TV presentations helped beekeepers grasp concepts effectively.
Observations and Recommendations:
Subsequent field visits by Mr. Manjunath in December revealed a slight decrease in bee colony numbers due to extreme cold temperatures. To mitigate this, a sugar water solution was recommended in a 2:1 ratio as an interim measure until the full bloom of mustard flowers. This solution aims to sustain bee populations until the arrival of the mustard bloom, which is expected to significantly boost hive populations.
Upcoming Plans:
As mustard flowers come into full bloom, beekeepers anticipate a substantial increase in hive productivity. Beekeeping alongside mustard cultivation is known to enhance crop yield by 15-20%. Experts assert that bee pollination not only improves crop quality but also increases production yield. Thus, beekeepers are eagerly awaiting the impending mustard bloom, which will mark a crucial phase in their beekeeping journey.
Conclusion:
The beekeeping project by READS has made significant strides in empowering rural beekeepers in Jashpur district. Through strategic training and ongoing support, beekeepers are equipped with the knowledge and resources necessary to thrive in their beekeeping endeavors. Looking ahead, the project aims to further enhance beekeeping practices and foster sustainable livelihoods among rural communities.
