International Delegates and Experts Assess Carbon Credit Potential in Jashpur and Manora TDF Projects

As part of the ambitious Carbon Credit Framework Programme under NABARD’s TDF (Tribal Development Fund) initiative, high-profile delegates and agroforestry experts visited TDF Wadis in Jashpur and Manora, Chhattisgarh, over two days. The program is aimed at promoting carbon sequestration and facilitating carbon trading through the measurement of CRUs (Carbon Removal Units), each representing the removal of one metric ton of CO₂ from the atmosphere.

Day 1: Visit to Jashpur TDF Wadi

On the first day, November 30, 2024, Mr. Sicco, lead agroforestry expert from RABO Bank Netherland, Mr. Nishant, RABO Bank consultant, Mr. Pradeep, AVP IBCC NABCONS, and Mr. M. Bara, DDM NABARD, visited the Jashpur TDF Wadi. The team assessed the progress of agroforestry initiatives, focusing on tree biomass and its contribution to carbon sequestration. The experts discussed strategies to enhance community involvement in carbon trading programs while maximizing the environmental and economic benefits for tribal beneficiaries.

Day 2: Visit to Manora TDF Wadi

The second day, December 1, 2024, featured a visit to the Manora TDF Wadi, where the same team of experts continued their evaluation. The delegation emphasized the importance of involving the beneficiaries of NABARD’s TDF projects in carbon removal and trading. The focus was on leveraging agroforestry and tree-based farming systems to capture atmospheric carbon and promote sustainable development.

Objective and Scope of the Programme

The Carbon Credit Framework Programme, promoted by NABARD, aims to advance carbon trading through CRUs, representing measurable CO₂ sequestration in agroforestry areas. By engaging beneficiaries of NABARD’s TDF projects, the program seeks to incentivize sustainable land-use practices and improve tribal livelihoods.

Management by READS

The Rural Educational and Development Society (READS) played a key role in managing the TDF Wadis in both Jashpur and Manora. Their efforts ensured smooth coordination and highlighted the potential of community-driven agroforestry to contribute to global climate action goals.

Significance of the Visit

The visit underscored the growing importance of agroforestry in addressing climate change through carbon sequestration. It also showcased how projects like NABARD’s TDF initiative can empower tribal communities by connecting them with international carbon credit markets.

With such collaborative efforts, the TDF projects in Jashpur and Manora are set to become benchmarks for integrating sustainable development with global climate action frameworks. The delegation expressed optimism about scaling up similar initiatives in other regions, enhancing environmental benefits while strengthening local economies.
