In the serene village of Maina, nestled amidst the lush greenery of Bagicha tehsil in Jashpur district, Chhattisgarh, a story of collective endeavour and prosperity unfolded through the Maina Laranga WDF project led by the Rural Education And Development Society (READS) and supported by NABARD.


Before the project's inception, the residents of Maina primarily engaged in daily wage labour to sustain their livelihoods. However, the intervention of the TDF-WDF project presented a new opportunity for collective growth and economic empowerment through group farming initiatives.


Led by individuals from the community, the villagers pooled their resources and embarked on a journey of collective agricultural entrepreneurship. With the support provided by READS, including FB work and distribution of millet seeds, they ventured into kutki cultivation for the first time on a combined land area of 15 acres.


The results of their collective efforts were nothing short of remarkable. From their maiden harvest, the group achieved a total yield of 73.60 quintals of kutki, translating into a substantial income of Rs 2,94,400. This successful venture not only brought financial prosperity to the participants but also fostered a sense of camaraderie and unity within the community.


The impact of group farming extended beyond economic gains. It promoted the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices and facilitated the exchange of knowledge and expertise among community members. Moreover, it contributed to the diversification of agricultural activities in the region, reducing dependency on traditional crops and enhancing food security.


Major problems/challenges/issue faced before the project implementation:

15 Acre Land was totaly Barren, so farming was impossible in this land, farmer was unable to farming in this land whole year lack of water resource facility.


Major interventions adopted to address the above-mentioned issues:

VWC and Project staff have meeting with this land farmers and visited this land after it is discussed to start treatment, this land form of FB (Farm Bund) work in summer season. In kharif Season Kutaki (Millet), was sown in this 15 acre land Area. Good quality Kutaki seed was Provided to farmers unders this watershed project “Droght flood resilent variety activity”. Farmers Cultivation Cost was reduced in the fields. Kutaki (Millet) production was very good, total production was 73.60 Quintal in 15 acre. Kutaki Farmers earned Rs-294400/-, before it Millet Culivation training was provided also to these farmers under Adavance Agriculture activity


Major impact or outcomes of the interventions in the project area:

With the help of the project, there has been a big change in the farming of this farm. Along with this, there was a big change in the lives of farmers also. The amount of Rs 2.00 lakh earned from millet (Kutki) has been given as contribution in the development of a religious place in his village. The farmers have divided the remaining amount of Rs 94400/- among themselves.


As the villagers of Maina continue their journey of collective farming, they exemplify the spirit of cooperation and resilience that defines rural communities.
