In the idyllic village of Jamhati, nestled amidst the rustic charm of Shankargarh tehsil in Balrampur district, Chhattisgarh, lived Mukesh – a man whose journey from struggle to success illuminated the transformative power of grassroots initiatives.
Before the advent of the TDF-WDF project spearheaded by the Rural Education And Development Society (READS), Mukesh laboured as a daily wage worker, grappling with the uncertainties of rural livelihoods. However, destiny had a different plan for him.
With the intervention of READS' Devsara Jamhati WDF project, Mukesh found a glimmer of hope amidst the challenges of his daily life. Empowered by the support provided, he embarked on a journey of agricultural entrepreneurship, bidding farewell to the shackles of daily wage labour.
Armed with inputs such as 170 RM of farmyard manure and the installation of a biogas unit, Mukesh cultivated his dreams on two acres of land. Venturing into maize cultivation for the first time, he sowed the seeds of change, supplementing it with rice cultivation on another 1.5 acres of land.
The fruits of Mukesh's labour were not long in coming. From his maiden harvest of maize, he reaped an income of Rs 40,000, while his rice cultivation yielded a further Rs 65,400 – a testament to the promise of agricultural entrepreneurship in transforming rural livelihoods.
Buoyed by his newfound success, Mukesh took a bold step towards further prosperity. With his earnings, he invested in a pair of bullocks, equipping himself with the tools necessary for efficient farming operations.
