The Bagicha II Wadi project, supported by the Tribal Development Fund (TDF) and National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), has transformed the agricultural landscape and socio-economic conditions in Bagicha Block of Jashpur district, Chhattisgarh. Spanning from 27th February 2012 to 1st February 2018, this initiative has impacted 500 beneficiaries across six villages, heralding a new era of prosperity and sustainability.
Pre-Project Status:
Before the project intervention, the agricultural practices in the region were limited to traditional crops like paddy and jatangi. Lack of awareness about horticulture and unfavorable climatic conditions contributed to low productivity and rampant migration for labor work. The living standards were abysmally low, with a glaring gap in health and education awareness among the beneficiaries.
Project Implementation:
With the support of NABARD and TDF, the Bagicha II Wadi project took root, focusing on introducing horticulture crops like mangoes and pears. A total of 25 mango and 30 pear plants were planted per acre across 500 wadis. Water resource development (WRD) initiatives ensured proper irrigation, overcoming the challenge of frost protection through exposure visits and motivation sessions.
Post-Project Status:
The impact of the Bagicha II Wadi project has been profound, leading to a shift in cropping patterns and improved agricultural practices. Educational and health institutions have proliferated, enriching the social fabric of the community. Horticulture areas have expanded, leading to increased productivity and income generation. The beneficiaries now practice sustainable agricultural methods like System of Rice Intensification (SRI), organic farming, and drip irrigation.
The socio-economic condition of the beneficiaries has witnessed a remarkable turnaround. With a focus on financial inclusion, many have purchased bikes for easier mobility. The establishment of the FPO Haritkranti Aadiwasi Sahkari Samiti Bagicha has provided a platform for marketing their produce, ensuring fair prices and enhanced income. The average income per beneficiary has surged to ₹30,000-₹40,000 per annum, fostering economic independence and stability.
